Lydia Johnston
Lydia is an artist living and working in Taos, New Mexico. Her oil paintings are full of rich, vibrant colors. Her work is moving towards abstraction. She creates a sense of place without providing all the details, drawing you back continually to find something new. Her paintings have mystery, they allude to the familiar while remaining ambiguous. By hinting at things, she hopes to trigger your imagination, allowing you to connect in a profound way.
In her studio, she applies multiple layers of oil paint, using both transparent and opaque colors, to achieve a richness and depth. She works with brushes as well as wide color shapers, tools similar to palette knives, that give her work its distinctive look.
For thirty years she worked in Vermont, before moving to Taos, where she is delighting in the big, open skies and incredible light. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country and hangs in many private collections.
Sink into her art and be transported.
